Planning your wedding day timeline is one of the most exciting parts of the process! It’s where the vision for your celebration starts to come to life—from the quiet, meaningful moments to the big, joyful ones. As a Northern Michigan wedding photographer, I love helping couples create timelines that feel calm, intentional, and full of joy. Today, I’m walking you through what a photo-friendly wedding day can look like so you can feel completely confident heading into this special moment in your story.

Your timeline isn’t just about checking boxes or staying on schedule—it’s about creating a day that feels intentional, joyful, and fully you. For couples who value connection, care deeply about their loved ones, and want every detail to reflect their story, a well-crafted timeline gives you the freedom to be present.

When we plan out your day together, I’m thinking about more than just photos. I’m thinking about how we can give you space to soak in those little moments with your favorite people, how to build in breathing room so nothing feels rushed, and how to make sure the things you’ve thoughtfully chosen—from your florals to your heirlooms—get the attention they deserve.

Whether you're drawn to luxury and romance or candid laughter and spontaneous fun, the timeline is what brings it all together. And I’ll be there helping guide the flow so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

 

My Ideal Wedding Day Timeline (with a First Look)

Here’s a sample flow that keeps things easy, relaxed, and photo-friendly:

12:30 PM – Details & Flatlays
This is where the storytelling begins. I use this time to photograph your rings, bouquet, invitation suite, perfume, shoes, dress, or suit—anything that represents your style and day. I like to start slowly and intentionally here, laying a calm foundation before the rest of the day unfolds.

1:15 PM – Getting Ready Moments
While I'm capturing final makeup and hair touch-ups, candids, and robe shots with your people, my second photographer is typically with your partner documenting the same. Once you're ready to get dressed, we’ll do some beautiful portraits by the window, and I’ll also capture sweet moments with any loved ones helping you get into your outfit. These quiet moments are some of the most emotional and meaningful of the day.

2:15 PM – First Look
This private moment is one of the most emotional parts of the day. I help find a quiet, shaded spot with gorgeous light so you can see each other for the first time in a relaxed, intentional way. Whether you exchange private vows or simply soak in the moment, I’m there capturing it all quietly from a distance.

2:30 PM – Couple Portraits
Since you’re already dressed and glowing from the First Look, this is the perfect time to take portraits of just the two of you. I’ll gently guide you while keeping things natural and fun—so your photos reflect your connection, not stiff poses. These are the timeless images you’ll treasure forever.

3:00 PM – Wedding Party Portraits
We’ll photograph the full group together, then separate sides of the party, plus any fun or sentimental groupings you’ve planned. I aim to keep this light and joyful, so everyone has a great time while we stay efficient and photo-ready.

3:30 PM – Reception Details & Couple Break
If your reception is in a separate space, I’ll head there to photograph the untouched decor—centerpieces, signage, cake, place settings—before guests arrive. Meanwhile, you and your partner can relax in a private space, grab a drink, and reset before the ceremony.

4:00 PM – Ceremony
The big moment! I photograph your ceremony from multiple angles, capturing both the big moments and the quiet ones—like the way your partner looks at you or your parents holding hands. I use long lenses so I can be close without ever intruding.

4:30 PM – Family Portraits
We stay close to the ceremony site to make it easy for your family. I follow a pre-organized shot list (which I help you create beforehand!) so this part runs smoothly and quickly, giving everyone more time to enjoy cocktail hour. These images are generational keepsakes, and I treat them with the care they deserve.

5:00 PM – Just Married Portraits
These are some of my favorite moments of the day. The pressure is off, the joy is high, and the lighting is often amazing. We’ll step aside for 10–15 minutes to capture relaxed, romantic photos of you as newlyweds.

5:30 PM – Reception Begins
Time to celebrate! I’ll document your grand entrance, first dances, toasts, and all the laughter and happy tears that come with it. I also watch for golden hour and will gently pull you aside for a few sunset portraits if the light is dreamy.

 

Adjusting for a Traditional Timeline (No First Look)

If you’re planning to see each other for the first time at the aisle, we’ll shift portraits to after the ceremony. That means:

  • More time needed for couple + wedding party photos post-ceremony

  • Family photos still happen right after the ceremony

  • Sunset time becomes key (especially for fall or winter weddings)

We’ll still capture everything beautifully—you’ll just want to be mindful of the light and season.

 

Suggested Photo Timing (How Long We Really Need—and Why)

Here’s a breakdown of how much time I typically recommend for each part of the day—and why each one matters:

  • Details + Flatlays (45–60 minutes): This time lets me capture the beautiful little pieces of your story—your rings, shoes, florals, stationery, and other heirlooms—in a way that feels thoughtful and artistic. Starting slow and intentionally sets the tone for the rest of your gallery.

  • Getting Ready Photos (1.5–2 hours): This covers candid moments, final makeup touches, getting into your dress or outfit, and some beautiful portraits of you before the day unfolds. It's also the perfect time to capture emotion-filled moments with your people.

  • First Look + Couple Portraits (45–60 minutes): These quiet, emotional portraits are some of the most meaningful of the whole day. Having this time gives you space to connect, breathe, and create relaxed, stunning images that feel true to you.

  • Wedding Party Photos (30 minutes): Full group shots, individuals, and fun moments with your favorite people. This time goes quickly, so having everyone ready to go makes all the difference.

  • Family Portraits (20–30 minutes): We'll stay efficient and organized here. A little prep goes a long way—I help build your shot list so everyone knows where to be and we can move through it with ease.

  • Golden Hour Portraits (15–20 minutes): If we can sneak away during sunset, this is when the light is magic. It’s also often your first quiet moment as newlyweds—just the two of you soaking it in.

  • Reception Details (15–20 minutes): If your reception is in a separate space, I’ll photograph everything untouched before guests arrive. It gives you gorgeous keepsakes of your design and decor that often get overlooked once the party starts.

 

Common Timeline Questions

"Do we have to do a First Look?"
Nope! But if you want more time for portraits earlier in the day (and to enjoy cocktail hour), a First Look can be really special.

"What if we run behind?"
It happens! I build buffer time into your timeline so one little delay doesn’t throw off the whole day.

"Can we do sunset portraits?"
Absolutely! I usually recommend sneaking away for 10–15 minutes during dinner or before dancing starts. The light is dreamy, and the break is often your first quiet moment together as newlyweds.

"When should we do family photos?"
Right after the ceremony is ideal. I help build a family list in advance so we can move quickly and get you back to celebrating.

"Can we go to multiple locations for portraits?"
While it may sound fun, I usually recommend keeping things simple. Traveling between multiple spots can eat up your timeline and add unnecessary stress. Choosing one beautiful location gives us more time to actually take photos, relax, and capture authentic moments.

"Can we add a bridal boudoir session to the day-of timeline?"
Yes—just be sure to account for it in your schedule. If you want a mini bridal boudoir session before getting dressed, I recommend planning for at least 30 extra minutes and making sure you have a quiet, private room with great natural light.
