Engagement Session Style Guide | What to Wear & Expect for Your Photos
Hey friend! I’m so excited you’re here—because if you’re reading this, that probably means your engagement session is coming up soon (yay!!). First of all, take a deep breath and let yourself be excited. You’ve already made some of the biggest decisions—like picking a date, a venue, and a photographer (hi, it’s me!). Now it’s time for something really fun: your engagement photos.
I created this guide to walk you through exactly what to expect and help you feel totally prepared, relaxed, and confident. From what to wear to how to prep your groom, I’ve got you covered. Because yes—these photos are going to be beautiful, but the experience matters just as much. I want this to feel like a date night, a memory, and a celebration of your love.
Whether you're feeling excited or a little nervous (totally normal!), I promise to make it easy. Let’s dive in and get you ready for an engagement session that feels true to you—and results in timeless, joyful photos you’ll treasure forever.
Why Your Engagement Session Matters
This session isn’t just about getting great photos (although you definitely will)—it’s about connection. We get to know each other, you get to experience how I pose and shoot, and you’ll feel so much more comfortable and confident when the wedding day comes. Plus, it’s a fun and meaningful way to celebrate this season of life together. You get to slow down, be fully present with your person, and soak in all the joy of being engaged—just the two of you, without any pressure. It’s the start of telling your story, your way—and I’m so honored to capture it.
What to Expect at Your Session
Here’s a quick breakdown of what you can expect:
Timing: I typically schedule engagement sessions on weekday evenings to take advantage of golden light. Depending on the season, we’ll start anywhere from 3–7pm.
Location: I’m happy to suggest options, but I love when couples choose a location that’s meaningful to them—whether it’s where you had your first date or a place you love spending time together.
Outfit Changes: Most couples choose two outfits: one dressy and one more casual. I’ll help you plan for where and how to change—sometimes it’s in the car!
Making it a Date: Plan something fun afterward—like dinner or drinks. Let this be more than just a photo session. Make it a memory.
What to Wear: My Best Styling Tips
Choose Two Outfits
Most couples opt for two looks: one casual and one a little more dressed up. This gives you a nice mix of vibes in your gallery—something cozy and comfortable, and something a little extra for those more romantic or editorial shots.
Think: a cute everyday outfit you’d wear on a date night, and then a statement dress or tailored outfit that makes you feel amazing. Bonus? Outfit changes help you relax between locations or poses and give you both a fresh boost of energy!
And don’t worry—if you’re between a few options, I’m always happy to weigh in. Bring extra pieces or text me photos ahead of time!
Neutrals > Bright Colors
Soft, light tones are a dream for creating that timeless, romantic feel—think ivory, beige, soft pinks, dusty blues, sage, creams, and grays. These colors tend to reflect light beautifully and keep the focus on you, not the clothes.
Bold neons, deep reds, and bright oranges tend to reflect color back onto your skin (which can be tricky to edit), and tiny patterns can sometimes distort on camera. You absolutely don’t need to play it safe, but choosing intentional colors makes a big difference in the final look of your gallery.
Want to add a little color? Try muted versions of your favorite hues—lavender instead of purple, burnt orange instead of neon, dusty teal instead of bright turquoise. That way you still get personality without distraction.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
This is a big one! Matching outfits (like both wearing white shirts and jeans) can fall flat in photos. Instead, go for coordinating colors that complement each other.
For example, if one of you is wearing a warm earthy tone, pair it with a soft neutral. Mix textures like denim and linen, or knits and cotton for visual interest.
Think about how your outfits look together in a photo. Do they balance well? Do they feel cohesive? My goal is to help you both look amazing—together—while still letting your individual style shine.
Think Movement + Texture
This is one of the easiest ways to elevate your photos. Flowy fabrics, layered textures, and pieces that move with the wind bring so much beauty and life into your images. Long dresses, skirts with a soft twirl, ruffled sleeves, open cardigans, or fabrics like tulle, chiffon, or linen—yes, please!
Even when you're standing still, your clothes can add a natural, romantic feel. Movement helps your photos feel less posed and more magical—especially during candid moments like walking, twirling, or dancing together. (Which yes, we will do!)
Trendy or Timeless? Let’s Talk About It.
There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to style—some couples love a classic, clean look, and others want something a little more bold or trendy. The good news? You can totally do both! You don’t have to stick to one “style box” if that’s not you.
If you love something a little more you saw it on TikTok last week—go for it! I’m talking oversized blazers, fashion-forward silhouettes, fun textures like satin or leather, cool boots, wide-brim hats, or even matching sneakers. Want to wear a dress with a dramatic slit or train? Obsessed. Do you live in neutrals but want to pair it with a bold lipstick or a claw clip? Love it. Want to be a little spicy, flirty, glam, or laid-back? I’ll support you 100%.
This is your chance to dress in a way that feels like you two. Not what Pinterest says is trendy. Not what your best friend wore. Something that feels fun, confident, and true to your personality as a couple.
And remember: you’re not dressing for anyone else. If it makes you smile, makes you feel beautiful, and helps you feel connected to your partner, it’s perfect. We’re going to have fun. We’re going to laugh. You’re going to look amazing, and your photos are going to feel like you.
If you’re ever unsure, send me what you're thinking—I’ll give you honest (but kind!) feedback. I love helping with outfit planning.
Let’s Talk Location: Meaningful, Fun, or Just Plain Gorgeous
When it comes to picking a spot for your engagement session, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer—and that’s the fun part. I always say: choose a location that feels like you. It could be the beach where you spend summer evenings, your favorite hiking trail, the coffee shop where you had your first date, or even just a gorgeous field with dreamy light.
Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. I’ve shot in everything from downtown alleys to cherry blossom orchards and stunning hotel lobbies—and I’m always up for something unique. The more you the location feels, the more connected and personal your photos will be.
If you’re stuck, I’m happy to help you brainstorm the perfect spot based on your vibe and vision. And if the light is good, I can make anywhere look amazing—promise.
Want to Go Somewhere Epic? I’m In!
Thinking about taking your engagement session somewhere a little farther? Yes please. I absolutely love shooting destination engagement sessions—and if there’s a dreamy spot that means something to you (or one you’ve always wanted to visit), let’s make it happen.
Whether it’s a weekend trip to the mountains, the city where you met, or a bucket-list beach location, I’m always up for an adventure. I provide custom quotes for destination engagement sessions depending on travel, and I’ll help you plan everything from timing to outfits and local logistics.
Just reach out with your vision and we’ll make it happen—passport ready. ✈️
Groom Tips: What He Needs to Know
If your partner isn’t super excited about photos, don’t worry—that’s totally normal. Most grooms aren’t sure what to expect, but by the end of the session, they’re usually saying, “That was actually way more fun than I thought!”
This session isn’t about stiff poses or fake smiles. It’s about the two of you being yourselves and enjoying the moment. Here are a few things you can do to help him feel more relaxed going in:
Show him a few past sessions so he has a better idea of what it’ll be like (spoiler: lots of laughing and snuggling, not weird poses).
Give yourselves extra time before the session so you’re not rushing or feeling flustered before we even start.
Remind him there’s no pressure to “perform.” I’ll guide you both the whole way—it’s my job to make it feel easy and natural.
Most importantly, trust that this is going to be fun. You get to hang out with your favorite person, and I’ll take care of the rest.
Engagement Session Prep Checklist
Here’s your go-to list before the session:
✔️ Clean your ring
✔️ Empty your pockets (especially phones + keys)
✔️ Bring comfy shoes for walking
✔️ Lipstick and hairspray for touch-ups
✔️ Plan for any parking fees
✔️ Be on time—sunset moves fast!
✔️ Most of all—breathe and have fun!
FAQs
Can we go to multiple locations?
You can, but I recommend keeping it to two locations max. More places usually means more driving and less photo time. Simple is best—it gives us more room to create beautiful images without stress.
Can we bring props or pets?
Absolutely! If you have something meaningful—like champagne, a vintage car, or your pup—bring it! Just give me a heads-up so I can plan accordingly.
What if the weather is bad?
I keep a close eye on the forecast and we’ll reschedule if needed. Overcast is actually great for photos, but we’ll avoid rain and storms if we can.
Should I Get Hair and Makeup Done?
Yes—go for it! If there’s ever a time to treat yourself and go all in, it’s now. Professional hair and makeup can make you feel extra confident in front of the camera, and it’s the perfect excuse to do a trial run before the big day. You’ll look amazing, feel even better, and it takes one more thing off your plate the day of. If it helps you show up feeling your best—you deserve that.
