Goodrich Family Cherry Blossom Photos in Northern Michigan Orchards

Collage of family photos during a spring cherry blossom session in Northern Michigan, featuring a mom, dad, and baby sharing sweet moments under blooming trees near Traverse City.

I loved getting to take these photos for the Goodrich family during cherry blossom season near Traverse City, Michigan. If you're not from here, you might not know—cherry blossoms are a huge Northern Michigan staple. We’re known for our cherries and our breathtaking orchards, and every spring they bloom into the most magical backdrop for photos. It’s one of my favorite times of year to photograph families, and this session was extra special to me.

Kijlee (yes, the beautiful mama in these photos!) was actually my boss when I worked at the Kalkaska Kaliseum years ago—back when I was still pregnant with Noah and long before I became a full-time photographer. I truly loved working for her. When I left that job, I was so sad to say goodbye, but also excited for what was next—becoming a mom, then working at the health department, and eventually chasing my dream of starting this photography business.

Back then, neither of us had kids yet. I was pregnant with my first, and now between the two of us, we’ve got five! It was such an honor to reconnect and get to capture this season of her life and the sweet family they’ve built.

Family sessions like this are always a little unpredictable—and that’s totally okay. Honestly, the kiddos lead the way, and I love that. Two of the kids had fallen asleep in the car on the way, so waking up for photos wasn’t exactly their favorite thing. But Kylie and John had the best attitudes. They stayed in great spirits, went with the flow, and just trusted the process.

And because of that—we got beautiful photos. One of their kiddos warmed up for a few sweet moments, and another gave me the cutest walking-away shot that I genuinely love. It’s real life. It’s this season. That kind of honesty and chaos? It’s beautiful.

There’s a stage in every child’s life where they don’t really want to take photos. My own kids have had their fair share of those moments! I remember doing a session when Nash was about to turn two, and he wanted absolutely nothing to do with it. But even then, I’m so glad I have those images. His tiny baby rolls, the way he looked at that age—those things are already starting to fade as he grows. And that’s the whole point of this. It’s not about perfect smiles or Pinterest-worthy poses. It’s about preserving your family as they are right now.

So if you’re feeling nervous about how your kids will do during your session, just know: you’re not alone. And if you let go a little and lean into the chaos? That’s where the magic happens.

It meant so much to me to photograph the Goodrich family and see Kijlee again after all these years. Watching her be such a wonderful mom and seeing her family thrive was so sweet, and I’m so thankful I got to be part of it.

Whether your kids are full of giggles, shy snuggles, or a little chaos (or all three!), these are the moments that matter. My family sessions are relaxed, joyful, and centered on capturing the real connection between you and your people. If you're looking for photos that feel like your family—not just posed smiles—I’d love to be part of it.

When is the best time for cherry blossom photos in Northern Michigan?
Cherry blossom season typically peaks in early to mid-May, depending on the weather. I keep a close eye on the blooms each year to make sure we schedule sessions at just the right time for those dreamy, full blossoms.

Where do these cherry blossom sessions take place?
Most sessions take place in orchards near Traverse City, Michigan—right in the heart of Northern Michigan’s cherry country. Once you book, I’ll share all the location details with you and help choose the perfect spot for your family.

What should we wear for our session?
I always recommend soft, neutral tones that complement the natural beauty of the blooms—think creams, denim, dusty blues, and blush. After booking, I send a full style guide to help you plan outfits that feel like you and photograph beautifully.

What if my kids don’t want to cooperate?
Totally okay—and honestly, totally normal. Kids lead the session, and I’ll gently guide things while letting them warm up and feel comfortable. Some of the most beautiful images come from the unplanned moments, and I’m all about capturing your family as you are in this season.

How far in advance should I book a cherry blossom session?
These sessions are limited and book quickly—especially because bloom timing can be unpredictable. I recommend reaching out as early as January or February to get on my spring schedule.

Do you offer mini sessions during cherry blossom season?
Yes! I offer a limited number of cherry blossom mini sessions each spring. They’re short and sweet—perfect for young kids or updated family photos. Reach out here to join the waitlist or inquire about availability.

If you’re thinking about booking a family session—whether it’s just your little crew or the whole extended family—I’d love to help you capture this season in a way that feels relaxed, joyful, and true to you. These moments matter, and your story deserves to be remembered.
